Maybe you had never heard of Thomas MacDonald before he began hosting Rough Cut—Woodworking with Tommy Mac on PBS in 2009. These days he ranks as one of the best-known names in woodworking. But Tommy's road has been anything but a cruise in the fast lane. In fact, you could easily call him an overnight sensation years in the making.
In this dinner presentation, Tommy Mac tells how he went from a blue-collar upbringing to voc/tech school dropout to hosting his own TV show. He'll share the story of his transformation, his passion for all things woodworking, and answer your questions.
Rough Cut Woodworking with Tommy Mac is a production of WGBH Boston. Distributed by American Public Television. Major funding is provided by Woodcraft. Additional funding is provided by Microjig, Pony Tools, DMT, Easy Wood Tools, Laguna Tools, Titebond, and Steel City.
If your spouse will be joining you for the trip to Des Moines, check out these optional “discovery packages” designed just for your "Weekend" companion.
Friday & Saturday, May 15–16.
Start Friday with a little breakfast and browsing as you pick your way through the repurposed architectural elements at West End Architectural Salvage, home of the DIYNetwork television series West End Salvage. Next, you’ll tour Salisbury House, a spectacular mansion built for about 3 million dollars in the early 1900s. Then it’s off to lunch in historic Valley Junction, where you’ll have time to shop the unique boutiques and antique stores that characterize the district before ending your day with a tour of the Iowa State Capitol building.
Then on Saturday, sleep late if you like, or start the day early with a tour of Better Homes and Gardens, including the multi-million dollar Test Kitchen and the Test Garden—a lush oasis in the heart of downtown. The rest of your morning will be free to explore downtown Des Moines, including the Pappajohn Sculpture Park just a few blocks away from Meredith Headquarters, or trek a little further and enjoy the world-famous Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market. Then, come back to Meredith for lunch, followed by three hour-long seminars taught by our expert editors:
Behind the Scenes in the Meredith Test Kitchen. Go behind the scenes in the Meredith Test Kitchen, home to Better Homes and Gardens, Midwest Living, Diabetic Living, Traditional Home, and Parents magazines. Lynn Blanchard, Test Kitchen Director, will show you how recipes are developed and tested for many of the Meredith magazines and books, plus you’ll learn how editors plan and develop story ideas. Meredith Corporation’s Test Kitchen—the oldest media company test kitchen in the United States—has been in continuous operation since 1928. This facility is not open for public tours, so this is your exclusive chance to see it first hand.
Grow Wild: Gardening for Birds & Butterflies. Make your backyard, balcony, or rooftop an oasis for wild creatures. Country Gardens Editor James A. Baggett showcases annuals, perennials, and trees and shrubs that will transform your own backyard into one that welcomes songbirds, hummingbirds, and butterflies—while making it much easier to care for. Above all, the wildlife oasis you create will be as rewarding to your human eyes as it will be nourishing to your winged guests.
Travel Bucket List! Secrets and Must-sees of the Midwest. Buckle your seat belt and get ready for a virtual weekend road trip through the 12-state Heartland that will inspire, amuse and entertain you—and have you making plans for this summer. Scenic beaches. Romantic escapes. Cultural icons. Awesome get-away drives. And a few things so strange that you just can’t resist. Midwest Living Senior Travel Editor Jacquelyne Froeber and Travel Editor Amanda Glazebrook will be your guides for the journey.
