I'm flying in: Do I need a rental car?

Most if not all Des Moines hotels run shuttles to and from the airport. And for evening meals, there are several very good restaurants within walking distance downtown. Cab service in Des Moines (except from the airport) is pretty much an on-call basis—you can’t just flag one down on the street like you could in, say, NYC or Chicago. But you can get by very easily without a rental.

The Meredith campus is at the western end of downtown and, although downtown hotels may cost more than those out by the airport, some are walkable to our building—Hotel Fort Des Moines is the nearest at about 6 blocks.

You might also find another attendee you could ride with to and from the conference. As we get closer to the date, post a ride request on the "Weekend With WOOD" Facebook page

I'm driving in: Should I stay downtown, too?

You sure could. There's free on-site parking at Meredith during the conference, so you could drive yourself, offer a ride to another attendee, or catch one yourself. Or enjoy the beautiful Iowa spring weather and hoof it.

Or, you could stay out by the airport where hotels costs might be lower than downtown. You'll find about a dozen hotels in that area with published rates around $100, give or take $20. You'll save even more with free parking at the hotel. Most of those hotels are on Fleur Drive, which is a straight shot of about 10 minutes on surface roads that ends right at Meredith's door.
